Bishopsgate Goodsyard redevelopment set for approval

The Greater London Authority’s planning officers have recommended that London mayor Sadiq Khan should approve plans to redevelop Bishopsgate Goodsyard, E1.

The GLA’s planners said the proposals from Ballymore and Hammerson were “well considered” and of a high quality, which would make a “significant” contribution to regenerating the area.

In the report to the mayor, the planners added that while the proposals would have “severe impacts on neighbourhood amenity with regard to daylight and sunlight”, any further reductions in the height and massing of the 10 planned buildings “would fail to optimise the development potential of the site”.

The number and mix of affordable homes and affordable workspace planned was also considered to be acceptable by the planning officers, and the harm to surrounding heritage assets less than substantial, despite concerns from Hackney and Tower Hamlets councils.

A spokesperson for Hammerson and Ballymore said: “We have listened carefully to feedback on our original proposal and, after extensive consultation with the local community, Hackney and Tower Hamlets councils and the Greater London Authority, our revised plans provide for a balanced, mixed-use scheme while significantly reducing the height and density of buildings across the site.

“We believe our revised plans will deliver a huge range of opportunities for the local area and London long into the future. We look forward to highlighting the many benefits of the scheme to the mayor of London.”

Khan is expected to make a decision on the scheme on 3 December – five years after it was called in.
