Bishopsgate’s Braithwaite Viaduct is listed

The Braithwaite Viaduct at Bishopsgate Goodsyard has been listed as Grade II.

English Heritage had put forward for listing a complex of buildings on the site, including storage vaultsbut the Department for Culture Media and Sport decided that only the viaduct met the criteria.

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said: “Apart from the Braithwaite Viaduct, I am satisfied that all the other buildings and structures at Bishopsgate Goodsyard do not meet the criteria of special architectural or historical interest.”

The listing will mean that any intention to demolish, alter or extend the structure in such a way that would affect its character would require listed building consent from the local planning authority.

The Viaduct was built between 1839 and 1842 and although it originally spanned over 2km, it now measures only 260m. The forecourt walls and gates to the Goodsyard were listed in 1996.
