Black Friday starts early

Retailers are attempting to steal a march on each other by launching Black Friday deals as early as today.

November 28 is predicted to be the biggest shopping day so far in the UK this year, with Mintel predicting that we will spend in excess of £200m, twice as much as last year, as shops slash prices to lure Christmas shoppers.

But Amazon, which claims it introduced Black Friday to the UK in 2010, has decided to stagger deals throughout the week, while Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, John Lewis, Argos Lakeland, Currys and Dixons are all planning to slash prices for Friday.

In the USA the wee-long Black Friday is becoming the norm.

Meanwhile, frenzied price cutting by supermarkets has led to the failure of 146 food companies in the 12 months to September, a 28% rise on last year, according to accountancy firm Moore Stephens.
