Criticism of the redevelopment of the 2 Puddle Dock site, EC4, has prompted Blackfriars Investments chief executive Mallory Clifford to deny that his company is responsible for shutting down the Mermaid Theatre, EC4. Blackfriars won consent this week to redevelop the 200,000 sq ft, Alsop Architects-designed office scheme. Clifford said: “It is simply not true that we closed down Mermaid. When we took it over in 1996 it had already closed. Nobody thinks the Mermaid works as a venue. Even so, we are giving the City £6m for dramatic projects.” The money, taken from Blackfriars as planning gain, will be handed to the Theatre Trust, which is likely to give £2m to the Unicorn Children’s Theatre, and split the remainder between the Bridewell and other projects. Colliers CRE and ATIS REAL Weatheralls are letting agents, and Dechert is planning adviser.
