Blair tries to stop Nissan switching Micra production to France

The prime minister will intervene to try to stop Nissan switching production of its new Micra from Sunderland to a French plant.

Nissan has already asked for state aid towards the £150m investment it would have to make at Sunderland.

Sir Ken Jackson, leader of the AEEU engineer union is urging Ford to transfer production of a new Volvo from its Ghent plant in Belgium to Dagenham, east London, when the assembly line is due to close in 2002.
