The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has approved plans for the 3,610-homes development at Canary Wharf, E14.

Canary Wharf Group’s new development, on land formerly known as Wood Wharf, will transform a vast 33.6-acre site that has been semi-derelict and underused for decades.

As well as housing, a hotel, leisure facilities, shops and a primary school are planned.

Canary Wharf Group will also be contributing more than £60m towards Crossrail and an additional £27.5m for other infrastructure needs.

Johnson said: “This is exactly the kind of scheme that we need to accommodate London’s booming population that is set to break through the 9m mark within the next decade.”

Sir George Iacobescu CBE, chief executive of Canary Wharf Group, said: “This new major district will reinforce Canary Wharf’s position into the future as one of the most exciting and vibrant places to live and work in London.”

The centrepiece of the scheme will be a 57-storey cylindrical residential skyscraper designed by Herzog & de Meuron.

Approval comes after consent was given by Tower Hamlets council in July.
