Boris gives Croydon tower green light

London mayor Boris Johnson has given the go-ahead for Menta’s proposed regeneration scheme at Cherry Orchard Road in Croydon.

The scheme includes a proposal for the tallest residential tower in the UK at 55 storeys, containing 424 homes.

The development will also include shops, 71,000 sq ft of offices, community facilities, cafes and restaurants, small business units and a 165-bedroom four-star hotel.

Despite receiving 510 letters of objection and 320 in support, Johnson said the advantages of the scheme outweighed any disadvantages.

In his decision letter, the mayor said: “A development of this scale will impact on neighbouring properties. However, for a development of this scale this impact has been mitigated against as much as possible through the orientation, form and location of the tower.”

The application was approved by Croydon council in July, but was called in by the mayor for a final decision due to its size.
