London mayor Boris Johnson has issued new planning advice aimed at making London the world’s most accessible city for disabled people.
The mayor’s Accessible London: Supplementary Planning Guidance includes plans to put aside £75m to install lifts in 12 more London stations over the next 10 years, and £250m to fund step-free projects at key London stations, including Bond Street, Vauxhall, Victoria and Finsbury Park.
The guidelines are aimed predominantly at planners and developers, and build on lessons learnt from London hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to ensure all new developments in the capital meet the best levels of accessibility.
Johnson said: “The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were widely recognised as the most inclusive ever and one way we achieved that was through the design of the venues and the Park. I am determined that we use that experience to ensure all new developments in London maintain this high level of accessibility.”
