Bourn Airfield 3,500-home scheme takes off

Countryside has received planning consent for a 3,500-home mixed-use community at Bourn Airfield near Cambridge.

South Cambridgeshire District Council approved the outline planning application at the committee today, 19 February.

Proposals include 40% affordable housing provision, 262 acres of open space, retail, employment and community health space. There will be a village centre, community hubs, two primary schools, a secondary school and a hotel.

The approval follows almost a decade of work to unlock the former RAF runway. Countryside will now submit a reserved matters application with a target to start construction by 2023.

Andrew Taylor, group planning director at Countryside, said: “Coupled with employment opportunities and surrounding transport links which will be developed in the near future, our community will be an important boost to individuals in the local area, allowing people to continue to live and work nearby.”
