On this week’s We’re Still Here podcast, host Emily Wright is joined by EG’s head of retail and industrial research James Child, as EG analysis reveals that a flood of lease expiries over the next five years could see close to 1bn sq ft of space back on the market.
Analysis using EG’s Radius Data Exchange shows that almost 65% of retail and food beverage leases signed since 2015 will expire of have lease breaks between now and 2025, potentially delivering some 975m sq ft back to landlords.
Child delves into the data on this week’s podcast and urges the sector to be prepared and act now but not to get too caught up in negative headlines and instead to focus on how the industry can manage the situation.
From repurposing and reanimating retail spaces for the future to recognising accelerated trends and the rise of independent retailers, Child discusses how landlords might manage the “glut of space” expected to arrive in the market over the next few years and how to rent it.
