The market closed 2016 with a 21% fall in transaction leases compared with 2015.
Quarter-on-quarter transactions slowed throughout the UK after the Brexit vote, with Q4 2016 posting a 36% fall in activity compared with the same period last year. In sector terms, food & beverage stole a lead on market share, rocketing to 29%, while its closest competitor, fashion, fell to 17%.
The high street showed relative resilience, increasing its deals share to 74.5% of all retail transactions (up from 71.5%) while shopping centres saw a fall from 24% to 21.4% year-on-year, according to EG data.
