Briefing: Stratford’s Olympic gold

One year ago on Friday 27 July, the world’s attention was fixed on Stratford, E20, for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. Once considered one of the poorest areas of Europe, Stratford was transformed for what was later declared the most successful Olympics ever.

But fears that momentum in regenerating the area might slow after the Games appear to have been wrong. Long-term occupiers have been secured for all eight of the permanent Olympic venues and a host of new developments have been proposed, including student flats, hotels and housing.

As our map below shows, much of the activity has centred around Westfield Stratford City.

CBRE senior director and head of east London, Matthew Black, said: “Compared with the legacy progress of previous Olympic Games, London definitely gets the gold medal.

“The activity in and around the park is phenomenal.”
