Bristol backs resi-led redevelopment of Broadwalk Shopping Centre

Broadside Holdings has received planning approval to redevelop Bristol’s Broadwalk Shopping Centre into an 850-home mixed-use scheme.

Under the plans, the shopping centre will be demolished and replaced with eight blocks of up to 12 storeys. The project will create 80,000 sq ft of offices, 2,000 sq ft of community space, a 3,000 sq ft library and a 9,400 sq ft cinema/theatre.

The site had an existing planning consent for 420 homes, which included part of the existing shopping centre being retained. Broadside Holdings’ latest proposal is an evolution of the consented scheme but now with the redevelopment of the entire shopping centre.

The plans were initially refused in May, owing to a lack of affordable housing. However, Bristol councillors changed their decision as the developer said it could deliver extra affordable homes with help from a grant from Homes England and housing associations.
