Plans for a shipping container-based retail scheme in Bristol have been approved.
Umberslade has unveiled plans for a retail hub scheme, Cargo, to be constructed from shipping containers at new harbourside development Wapping Wharf.
The first Cargo site will comprise 10 converted shipping container units of varying sizes and will be located between Gaol Ferry Steps, the new pedestrian walkway connecting south Bristol and the city centre, and Museum Square.
The project was granted consent last week, and work is expected to start in the coming months and complete in early summer.
The single containers each measure 8ft by 20ft and will have glass frontages. The lower level will be divided into five single units, plus three double units, which each measure 16ft by 20ft. A larger unit – equivalent to the size of five individual containers – will occupy the top level, along with another double.
The second phase, Cargo 2, would comprise 28 converted shipping containers across two levels located adjacent to Cargo. Plans have been submitted for this phase and a decision expected in the coming weeks.
Stuart Hatton, director of Umberslade, said: “We have been inundated with expressions of interest from across the country, from pop-up street food vendors to fine dining restaurateurs. With 40 retailer enquiries in Cargo alone, we have decided to submit plans for a Cargo 2.”
