Bristol Rovers football club is taking Sainsbury’s to court this week after the latter decided not to proceed with a redevelopment of the club’s Memorial Stadium.
The redevelopment was part of the football club’s plan to relocate to a new stadium. The Memorial Stadium site would have been redeveloped to include a supermarket and 65 homes.
Sainsbury’s said it was within its rights to withdraw from the planned redevelopment, citing concerns about the terms surrounding its planning permission. A director at the football club, however, described that as a pretext. A decision in favour of Bristol Rovers could cost Sainsbury’s up to £30m in damages.
