Land Securities and Hammerson are this morning assessing damage caused to their 1.5m sq ft Cabot Circus shopping centre after riots broke out in Bristol last night.
The riots, which began in London on Saturday evening, spread to other major cities across the UK last night, including Bristol, Birmingham and Liverpool.
In Bristol, running battles broke out in the St Pauls, St Werburghs and Stokes Croft areas, before spilling into the city centre. Cars and wheely bins were torched as a crowd of around 200 youths rampaged towards the city’s main stores.
Rioters targetted Cabot Circus, smashing windows and looting jewellery store Thomas Sabo.
However, a heavy police presence around the centre prevented any widescale damage.
Elsewhere in the city, Tesco, McDonald’s, Boots and a mobile phone shop were attacked as rioters moved into nearby St Pauls and Stokes Croft areas.
Chief Supt Jon Stratford from Avon and Somerset police said: “There has been a series of sporadic and volatile incidents throughout the night, with a small number of people intent on causing violence and criminal damage to property. This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated in our city.”
