Bristol scores new basketball stadium and homes

Plans to build a new basketball stadium and more than 500 homes in Bristol have been approved by the city council.

Bristol Sport is planning a new 3,626-seat stadium at the Ashton Gate Sporting Quarter as a new home for the Bristol Flyers basketball team, as well as a 232-room hotel, 125 flats, 29,000 sq ft of office space, shops, gym, club museum, and a multi-storey car park.

The applicant also proposed the development of a 510-home urban village, called Longmoor, to the west of the existing Ashton Gate Stadium. The proposals are interlinked, as Bristol Sport is expected to sell the Longmoor housing site to a housebuilder with planning permission to part-fund the delivery of the sports and convention centre.

Andreas Kapoulas, head coach of Bristol Flyers, said at the council planning meeting this week: “This development represents a huge opportunity for the club and the city – it’s a game-changer. Our vision is to grow the sport and the positive impact it has on the community.”
