Bristol to get £400m commercial and cultural heart at Harbourside (07:00) GMT

English Partnerships is spending £20m in a waterfront redevelopment at Harbourside, Bristol. The potential total investment estimated at nearly £400m will be funded by public and private partnerships.

Harbourside has won £41m of lottery funding for public squares, open spaces and two educational and leisure attractions. It covers 26.71ha (66 acres) of docklands and old industrial land on a site which has remained semi-derelict for 20 years.

Offices, restaurants, leisure attractions and 700 homes are planned.

Bristol 2000 will announce today it has appointed Symonds to handle the construction programme. Supporters include the city council, British Gas, Lloyds TSB, British Rail Property, JT Group and Bristol Chamber of Commerce & Initiative.

Its first commercial site, Newfoundland Place, has outline planning permission as a business quarter on nearly 2.43ha (six acres). Marketing begins today to select a developer.

The Arts Council is expected to decide today on a separate bid for £75m of lottery funding towards a £98m centre for performing arts at Harbourside, featuring a concert hall for more than 2,000 people.
