Britain has five years to build two or three gigafactories to cope with the sudden growth in electric car production.
Some 500,000 hybrid and pure electric vehicles are due to be built each year in the UK, requiring the creation of big battery production plants.
Jaguar land Rover, Nissan, BMW and Toyota are all committed to building electric cars in the UK. However, none of the global battery makers – LG Chem, Samsung, CATL or Panasonic – are planning a battery factory in the UK, while Tesla has opted to build its gigafactory in Germany instead.
The government has been accused of doing nothing to ensure that Britain will have the capacity, amid accusation that Britain will “miss the boat”.
