British firms sign up for new EU environment scheme

Five UK industrial companies – Akzo Nobel Chemicals, Ciba Clayton, Design to Distribution (D2D), National Power and NOR Systems – are the first in Europe to register their sites for the EC’s new environmental management scheme, EMAS.

Acceptance for registration under the scheme means that the firms have environmental policies committing them to continual improvement in environmental performance – as well as meeting all legal requirements.

Participation in EMAS is completely voluntary for companies, but each member state is required to arrange accrediting verifiers and to establish bodies to administer the scheme.

As an incentive to participation, there is no registration fee for the first year.
