Brixton loses office space to accommodate music college

Lambeth Council has approved its own plans to convert 9,000 sq ft of office space in the Brixton House Theatre for educational purposes.

The third floor of the redeveloped building, which opened in February last year, will accommodate the London Academy of Contemporary Music, a specialist music college.

The original plans for the Brixton House Theatre, approved in 2017, reduced the total business floorspace across the site by more than 2,000 sq ft. A subsequent amendment application was submitted and granted in January 2021, for the reduction of 900 sq ft of business floorspace in neighbouring Carlton Mansions, due to design changes in the building.

The council’s proposal, however, only sought to reduce ancillary floorspace and not ‘usable’ workspace. Therefore, it was argued “there would be no reduction in full-time equivalent jobs created by the development”.

ACM will use the space to offer courses in music performance, songwriting, production, business skills, and games development.
