Birmingham City Council has submitted plans for the 1,400-home athletes village in Perry Bar that will be built for the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
The Commonwealth Games Village is to be built on the site of the former Birmingham City University campus in Perry Barr and will be large enough to house 6,500 athletes.
Plans after the games are for the homes to provide a range of tenures of housing: social and affordable rent; for sale and private rent; and a retirement element.
The new development will be a major opportunity to regenerate and attract new investment into Perry Bar, much as the former Athletes Village did in Stratford in east London after the 2012 games.
John Crabtree, chair of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, said: “In the seven months since being awarded the 2022 Games there has been a lot of work done to prepare this planning application.
“Now is the time for anyone with an interest in the regeneration of Perry Barr to look at our plans in detail and give feedback to the city council planners.
“We want the people of the West Midlands to have ownership of the Games and this is one of the first significant ways in which they can do that.”
The plans can be viewed at the Birmingham City Council Planning Portal (search for application number 2018/06313/PA).
