Brum council unveils £11m City Park in Eastside

Birmingham council is to unveil fresh designs for the first new urban park to be developed in the city for more than 125 years.

It is hoped the project will stimulate further significant private sector investment in the city’s £6bn Eastside regeneration zone.

The council will self-fund the £11m project after Birmingham’s failed attempt two years ago to win £25m in Lottery funding.

The new eight-acre City Park will feature recreational space, formal gardens, water features and areas for special events.

The park will cover a stretch of land running from Moor Street Station to Eastside Locks, passing between Millennium Point and the main Birmingham to London rail line.

Despite missing out on Lottery money, support for the park remained strong, prompting the decision for the council to fund the project. The original architects have now produced fresh designs within a new budget.

Mike Whitby, leader of Birmingham council, said: “The new park will provide a cornerstone for the wider regeneration of Eastside, a key element of the Big City Plan.

“It will also provide those arriving in Birmingham with a striking vision just moments before they pull into the redeveloped £600m New Street Station Gateway.”

The project has benefited from funding from Advantage West Midlands and is due to start on site in early 2010, with completion by the end of 2011.
