Brum’s Grand Hotel plan goes to consultation

Grand Birmingham FULL

Private developer Hortons’ Estate and partner Trebor Developments are to hold a public consultation event next week regarding the £30m transformation of Birmingham’s Grand Hotel.

The event, at 23 Colmore Row on the 11 and 12 January, will unveil the duo’s proposals for the redevelopment of the 1890s-built hotel on the city’s prime office pitch. Plans include a five-star, 152-bedroom hotel. Detailed talks are taking place with an as yet unnamed hotel operator.

Plans include the restoration of the building’s Colmore Row and Church Street facade, a standalone bar and restaurant at the corner of Church Street and Barwick Street, refurbished shops on Colmore Row and office space on Barwick Street. The Grosvenor Suite ballroom will be fully refurbished and a terrace will be created in the central courtyard giving access to nine meeting rooms and the Grosvenor Suite. In addition, a hotel bar and restaurant, accessed from Colmore Row, will be provided. The hotel entrance will be moved to Church Street.

Hortons’ and Trebor hope to submit a planning application by the end of January.

Plans by Hortons’ to transform the building into a 200,000 sq ft office block in 2004 collapsed after its partner, Richardson Barberry, pulled out due to frustrations over delays caused by the the hotel’s listed status.
