Brum seeks leisure partners

MIPIM: Birmingham city council is seeking investors and development partners in order to fulfil its vision for a family leisure destination on the 14 ha wholesale market site in the city centre.

The site, which has been renamed Smithfield to tie in with its heritage, is seen as key to addressing the lack of family-friendly leisure offer.

Speaking to Estates Gazette at MIPIM on Thursday, Waheed Nazir, director of planning and regeneration said the lines between retail and leisure had blurred and that leisure was becoming increasingly important to create a vibrant city centre.

Birmingham had a number of other announcements at MIPIM including the appointment of Liz Peace, former chief executive of the British Property Federation, as chair of the Birmingham Curzon Urban Regeneration Company.

Nazir described Peace as a “unique character in property”, adding: “She has an ability and charisma to work with the private sector and public sector.”

BCURC will have responsibility for delivering regeneration on a 350-acre site around the proposed Birmingham HS2 station.

Listen to the podcast for more on Smithfield, Liz Peace and how Birmingham is handling a number of big regeneration projects.
