The £128m Midland Metro tram extension in Birmingham officially opened yesterday, eight months after its original scheduled launch date.
The new line will run from Snow Hill railway station to the recently revamped New Street station and Grand Central shopping mall – which sits above the station – in the city centre. The extension was due to open last September, but has been hit with a series of delays, including an uneven track.
Operated by Centro, the tram line will now run in its entirety from Wolverhampton to New Street station.
A further extension is planned out to Centenary Square which will stop outside the proposed Arena Central development, where HSBC’s new retail business headquarters is to be located. This service is due to start in 2019. A further extension will see the line run along Broad Street and past Five Ways by 2021.
