BT’s Dundee HQ rings the changes with student housing plan

Hindscarth Estates has filed plans to convert BT’s headquarters at Telephone House in Dundee into a 417-bed student accommodation block.

The proposed scheme would provide self-contained studios and en suite bedrooms with shared kitchens, across six storeys.

Other amenities would include common rooms, study rooms, a library, games rooms, private dining room, cinema, gym with yoga studio, and a courtyard.

Telephone House is currently occupied by 1,000 BT employees, who are due to vacate the building in September 2024 and move to BT’s new purpose-built office at West Marketgait in Dundee.

A document submitted for the application said: “The applicant therefore undertook a review of the building’s suitability for continued office use and concluded it is no longer viable, as it does not provide the essentials that a contemporary workplace must.

“Alteration/refurbishment works would not be able to resolve this due to the fundamentals of the building’s layout and form, with a very shallow plan and long floorplates.”
