New-build flats and houses should be kept away from the roadside, health advisers have said in guidance on town planning to cut exposure to dirty air.
Planning permission should be refused to developments that do not mitigate air pollution, and new buildings should be designed to avoid the need to arrive by car, according to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice).
Schools, nurseries and care homes should not be built in areas where pollution is high and buildings should incorporate trees on the roof and “green walls”, Nice said.
