A builder has been left with a £250,000 bill after finding an Anglo-Saxon burial ground on land where he planned to construct a lake to alleviate flooding.
Under the terms of the planning permission, Gary Boyce had to agree to fund archaeological investigations at the site. A company he engaged failed to find evidence of habitation.
Once Boyce began digging the lake, the burial site was discovered. Although Historic England stepped in to fund the excavation, Boyce said he suffered a massive knock-on effect on his finances.
