Burford in Anglia Square

by Denis Hall

Burford Group have announced plans for a major refurbishment and extension of the 450,000-sq ft Anglia Square complex in Norwich, East Anglia.

P&O sold Anglia Square to Burford for £7.6m last year. The mixed retail office and leisure complex was built in the early 1970s by Sovereign Properties.

Plans now include the construction of a new 100,000-sq ft office block on a 2.5-acre site adjacent to the centre.

The shopping centre currently provides a home for Sainsbury, Boots, Currys and Bejam — but Sainsbury have already announced their intention to vacate and move to a purpose-built superstore.

The complex also includes 190,000 sq ft of office space let to HMSO and the Treasury, an Odeon cinema, a 20,000-sq ft retail warehouse, a petrol station and two night clubs.

Negotiations with the council on Burford’s proposals have now been concluded and a planning application is being prepared.

Hillier Parker and Teacher Marks Deal have been appointed joint letting agents for the office accommodation.

Hilbery Chaplin acted jointly with Teacher Marks Deal in advising Burford on the purchase of Anglia Square.
