Andy Burnham is considering running to be the first mayor of Greater Manchester when the role is created in 2017.
The shadow home secretary’s spokesman said he has been approached to consider the position but has yet to decide whether he will stand for the role.
He would not give up his position in the shadow cabinet if he stood for mayor, the spokesman added.
Greater Manchester’s new mayoral role forms part of George Osborne’s northern powerhouse devolution agenda.
