Stephen Byers, trade and industry secretary, has stepped up pressure on BMW over the future of its Longbridge Rover plant, in Birmingham.
He called the new BMW chairman Joachim Milberg to reassure him the government was ready to help.
Milberg said he wanted the plant to show “presentable results” by the spring. He dismissed takeover speculation.
