Byers to put Arsenal back in play by end of February

DTLR Secretary Stephen Byers has promised to make a decision on Arsenal’s new stadium plans by the end of February.

The DTLR Secretary issued an Article 14 “holding order” earlier this week, which allows his department more time to decide.

But a spokesman at the department today said: “The Secretary of State has confirmed that he will decide on the scheme by the end of February at the latest.”

London mayor Ken Livingstone had previously written to Byers, warning him that calling in the £400m project “would be detrimental to the interests of London”.

The plans include 2,459 homes and more than 300,000 sq ft (27,900 sq m) of offices and retail, alongside a £250m 60,000-seat stadium at Ashburton Grove.

The existing stadium at Highbury would be redeveloped as luxury flats.
