CABE boss calls for parkland funding boost

CABE chairman Sir Stuart Lipton (pictured) has called for the amount of lottery money spent on public parks to be doubled.

Speaking yesterday at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, Sir Stuart said that the additional funding should be used to create innovative green spaces.

Sir Stuart Lipton said: “We are the fourth richest nation, and yet we have chosen for a long time to dress ourselves in rags.

“We must approach the design and construction of new green spaces with creativity and innovation – we must take more risks.

“One way to do this effectively is to secure extra funds from the lottery programmes. I propose we double the percentage of Lottery money given to our public parks.”

In a recent survey, 30% of respondents said that they were either afraid or unwilling to use the UK’s public parks.

CABE will shortly set up a new unit, called CABE Space, to promote investment in parkland.
