CABE commends revised Arsenal stadium plans

Arsenal FC’s revised plans for a 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove have scored highly with the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment.

The design, by architects HOK and CZWG, have been commended by the Government’s architecture watchdog for being “an intelligent plan that will transform this difficult site and which has the potential to become a model for facilities of this kind wherever they are built”.

CABE’s design review team said that the regeneration of Drayton Park and the thematic link between the stadium and the housing were particularly impressive.

The initial proposals were reviewed by CABE in January, when concerns were raised that the design did not take the wider setting of the scheme into account.

Arsenal went back to the drawing board earlier this year after initial plans were criticised for not including enough housing or offices.
