Caerphilly County Borough Council last night reaffirmed its intention to grant consent for a 3,000 sq m (32,293 sq m ) retail scheme on a 1.01ha (2.5 acre) site next to Crosskeys College on the Risca Road .
The proposal, which was included in Gwent’s Local plan before the authority was abolished last April, comprises a 929 sq m (10,000 sq ft) food store and three shops.
It is understood that the development will be sold to McAlpine. No sale price has been officially released, but Caerphilly Council spokesman Martin Lennon said the asking price for the site was £800,000 two years ago.
He said: “McAlpine is currently haggling over the price which is delaying the deal. They agreed to proceed with the development when Gwent was the controlling authority but since then a Kwik Save store has opened out of town and McAlpine has discovered problems with the drainage on site.”
The site’s freehold is owned by the new unitary authority and Gwent Tertiary College. Lennon confirmed that a planning application will be lodged within the next few weeks. He added that McAlpine wants to see the foodstore element trading by February 1997.
