Call for retirement home building boost

Spencer McCarthy, the chairman and chief executive of Churchill Retirement, is urging the government to waive requirements for affordable housing to enable developers to build retirement homes more quickly.

That would help to free up family housing occupied by older homeowners, as would reducing stamp duty for those looking to downsize.

The company reported a 52% rise in pretax profit in the 13 months to 30 June, while revenue rose 30%.
