Conservative MPs on the Treasury committee are among those joining a call for the government to amend the terms of Help to Buy Isas after it emerged that a government bonus for savers could not be put towards a deposit for a new home.
Meanwhile, a customer service adviser at NatWest, a major provider of the savings product, said in response to a complaint that the bank had also been under the impression that the bonus could go towards the deposit.
Treasury figures show more than half a million people have made use of the savings scheme, and that 22,000 have already received their bonus.
