Ministers should consider replacing the HS2 project with a conventional, slower railway line following the same route, the chairman of the Treasury select committee, Andrew Tyrie, said.
Estimates indicate a conventional line could be built along the same route for around £5bn less, he said.
The Department for Transport has previously rejected this option, saying the benefits of a quicker journey time outweighed the potential savings.
