Calthorpe Estates has been given the green light to build a new medical hub on its 1,500-acre (607ha) estate in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Designed by Glenn Howells Architects, the £8m, 30,000 sq ft landmark building will sit on a former car park to the rear of the former Birmingham Medical Institute headquarters at 30 Highfield Road, in the heart of Edgbaston Village.

The scheme will boost the area’s burgeoning healthcare community known as the Edgbaston Medical Quarter and will include open plan space for medical treatment, consultancy, research and administrative uses. An additional basement level is proposed.

Ralph Minott, director of development at Calthorpe Estates, said: “Edgbaston Medical Quarter’s reputation for world-class medical, healthcare and life sciences continues to go from strength-to-strength. As such, demand is growing for modern, flexible medical space which complements the established traditional medical properties and is located in the commercial heart of the estate.”

The planning decision follows on from the arrival of new tenant – Care Fertility – to the EMQ; while at Pebble Mill, the Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry are now operational. Work is expected to get under way on an approved new private hospital and BUPA Care facility in the next few months.
