Cambridge dons hard hats as development booms

Cambridge-cranes

Cambridge is one of the UK’s fastest-growing cities based on the number of building starts, according to research from Bidwells.

The advisory firm recorded 50 cranes across 14 schemes starting in the city last year, putting it alongside Birmingham and Manchester in terms of rapid growth.

The established Deloitte Crane Survey recorded nine starts in Birmingham in 2015 and 21 in Manchester. Cambridge, which has a population of only 128,500 –1/20th the size of Birmingham and Manchester – has one crane up for every 2,500 people.

Patrick McMahan, Bidwells’ senior partner, said the level of construction was testimony to Cambridge’s development of the growing bioscience and IT sectors.
