Plans to redevelop Stirling House, which forms part of the Cambridge Innovation Park North, have been approved by the council.
The existing development, measuring 48,000 sq ft, formerly served as a Ministry of Defence office building, comprising mid-tech workspace over two floors, either side of a shared atrium and security desk.
Paragon Land & Estates, investor and operator of the park, proposed to retain the building, which will be extended to 59,000 sq ft by adding extra ground floor space across an enlarged atrium and additional open plan work and meeting space.
The proposals, designed by architect Saunders, also include an increased balcony area above an extended rear lobby and additional windows in meeting rooms to provide more natural light.
In addition, there will be new second floor offices and meeting rooms added within the mezzanine floors, as well as PV panels on the roof.
Cambridge Innovation Park North, located on Denny End Road in Waterbeach, about 9km from Cambridge city centre, comprises two office buildings – Stirling House and Blenheim House – together with car parking and large undeveloped areas.
The site is also near the A10 and the disused runway formerly associated with Waterbeach Barracks which is being transformed into Waterbeach New Town, adding 11,000 new homes to the region.
The expansion of Cambridge Innovation Park North, excluding Stirling House, received planning consent in July 2021.
The proposals comprise the phased expansion and transformation of the park into a sustainable innovation campus, complementing the adjacent New Town proposals.
Nexus advised Paragon Land & Estates on planning.
