Cambridge seeks resi partners

The University of Cambridge is seeking a development partner for its £1bn residential-led scheme in north-west Cambridge.

The university is looking for partners for the first phase covering four lots of between 65 and 400 homes plus 530 key-worker flats and 300 postgraduate homes.

Developers will be asked to buy the freehold of the sites, although the university will retain overall ownership of the estate. Cambridge said it would adopt a flexible approach to the exact configuration to encourage niche developers and architects to tender.

Planning permission for the masterplan was granted in February for the 370-acre site, which includes 3,000 homes, 2,000 student beds, a supermarket, a primary school and a hotel. Infrastructure work is expected to start this year.

Developers have until the end of June to submit a prequalification questionnaire, with full tenders submitted by year end.

A preferred partner is expected to be selected in early 2014, with completion of the first phase scheduled for 2015.
