Cambs Council chooses Longstanton for new settlement

Cambridgeshire council has confirmed its decision to make Longstanton the site for a 6,000-unit housing settlement in the area.

The council claims that the Longstanton site meets the county and district criteria for development because it has “no special landscape or nature conservation value, it is available for immediate development and is close to the A14, M11 and A1.”

The settlement is also to have a new public transport system – the Cambridge Area Metro (superCAM) – to run between Cambridge and St Ives.

Alan Joyner, Project Director of Gallagher Estates, promoter of the Longstanton settlement, said: “Longstanton is a very suitable location, on land that has been previously used, beyond the flood plain and the city’s green belt.

“The settlement will not only provide new homes for the future, but also thousands of jobs through a thriving business community and a new Science and Business Park to be developed with Trinity College.”

In October, Gallagher Estates and Trinity College announced their plans to build a science and business park as part of the Longstanton scheme. Gallagher and Trinity will also be investing in superCAM.
