Camelot claims 110,000 jobs will be created as a result of lottery projects

National Lottery operator Camelot has published a report claiming that 110,000 jobs will be created or secured because of the lottery by the end of the century. Some 70% of these are expected to be new jobs.

The biggest beneficiary in job creation is the construction sector, where lottery grants are expected to lead to the creation of more than 30,000 jobs by the year 2,000. The report claims this equates to nearly 3% of all construction activity. A further 30,000 jobs could be created by “spin-off projects”.

The £125m Earth Centre project in South Yorkshire could collapse because of alleged “delays and indecision” by the Millennium Commission. The scheme is backed by Lottery funds. The Centre, due to be constructed near Doncaster, will be a showpiece for ecologically friendly and sustainable technology. Construction is behind schedule and two-thirds of the workforce were laid off last month. The Millennium Commission said it had always been supportive of the centre.
