The departing president of the National Trust, Sir Simon Jenkins, has attacked the prime minister for presiding over the destruction of the countryside.
Claiming that the Conservatives had broken election pledges to allow the countryside to be put at risk and called for a landmark listing system to protect rural areas, with national parks and areas orf outstanding natural beauty treated like grade I and II listed buildings.
