Canary Wharf Group (CWG) is in discussions with several department store operators for a flagship store in its Cabot Place shopping centre.
The company refused to comment on the proposals but sources close to CWG said plans to put a department store in the 96,000 sq ft shopping centre were now nearing completion.
“We have been trying to get things sorted out in Cabot Place to accommodate a department store, but nothing has been finalised yet,” said a source.
A number of department store operators are understood to have shown interest in the site, including House of Fraser.
There is no surplus space into which the centre can expand so several of Cabot Place’s current retailers would be forced to make way for the anchor retailer’s unit.
A favoured site for the store is between the entrance to Cabot Place West and the Ackermans chocolate shop.
The Jubilee Place mall and Canada Place mall, also at Canary Wharf, already have anchor department stores.
The John Lewis Partnership has a 25,000 sq ft Waitrose Food & Home store at Canada Place, while Marks & Spencer has a 12,000 sq ft anchor store at Jubilee Place.
