Canary Wharf Group plans to turn a floor in one of its underground car parks into a go-kart course.
The proposals will be keenly watched as the company attempts to change the perception of its estate amid ongoing debate over the outlook for offices.
If approved by Tower Hamlets, the plans would see the 80,000 sq ft fourth level of the Cabot Square car park, E14, transformed into a go-kart track with food and beverage facilities.
Canary Wharf councillor Andrew Wood welcomed the planning application as “good news” in a social media post, saying that car parks on the estate “have been quieter” and that a new leisure offering “will bring more people into the estate to use cafés [and] shops”.
The estate has 2,500 car parking spaces across four underground car parks in Cabot Square, Canada Square, Jubilee Place and Westferry Circus.
The Cabot Square car park sits between the North Colonnade and South Colonnade, and underneath the Cabot Place shopping centre.
