Candy may face further questions over lockdown party

Footage has emerged of dancing, drinking and laughing about breaking lockdown rules at a Covid-era Christmas party attended by Nick Candy.

At least 24 people attended on 14 December 2020, at Conservative Central HQ in London. Guests included the property developer and Conservative donor Candy and former mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey – now Lord Bailey, following his inclusion in Boris Johnson’s resignation honours list.

Both are believed to have left the building by the time the footage was taken, which people talking in close groups and two dancers, who twirl past a sign saying: “Please keep your distance”.

Speaking on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, levelling up secretary Michael Gove said the behaviour was “unacceptable and indefensible”.

The event was one of those investigated by the Metropolitan Police last year, but it said the still images it had seen showed insufficient evidence of lawbreaking.

The Met has said it is now “aware of the footage and are considering it”.
