Capital & Centric has confirmed the acquisition of a site to unlock the next phase of its 10-year Mesters’ Village masterplan in Sheffield.
Last month, EG reported that the social impact developer, backed by Homes England, was in talks with Sheffield City Council about taking over the former Swifts Performance site on Fitzwilliam Street.
The deal has now been approved by the council’s finance committee.
Located adjacent to Sheffield’s Devonshire Quarter, the project will be named Fitzwilliam. The site will be cleared and around 200 homes built, roads pedestrianised and new public squares created.
The design will take inspiration from the adjacent Eyewitness Works and Ceylon buildings, a historic grade II listed cutlery works scheme which has been converted into a new rental community alongside industrial-style flats in the new-build Brunswick building.
Mark Edwards, development director at Capital & Centric, said: “Our Eyewitness Works project and the surrounding buildings has been bringing a new community of renters to this part of the city. Fitzwilliam is the next chapter, where we are taking an unloved brownfield site and growing the Mesters’ Village neighbourhood.
“We have always had big plans for this area and our completed developments in the area so far has proved that there’s huge demand for beautifully designed, high-quality apartments. Sheffield is really having its moment and we’re looking forward to working with the city council to deliver another standout community.”
